Winnebago County community sensitive design  Aesthetic and functional designs, reflecting rich culture and history, will be an integral part of the US 41 Project in Winnebago County. WisDOT worked with local officials to obtain insight into the historic and celebrated cultural aspects of the area, and the subsequent designs were posted on the US 41 Project Web site for public commentary. The aesthetic design options for local bridges crossing US 41 and mainline bridges crossing local roadways incorporate architectural concrete detailing, special fencing, stained concrete and landscape development in roundabouts. The Lake Butte des Morts Causeway was identified as an opportunity to celebrate the culture and history of the state’s diverse Native American tribes. WisDOT received input from the eleven federally recognized Native American tribes of Wisconsin. The causeway will include a pedestrian walkway, lakeside overlooks and kiosks that reflect each tribe’s story. Unique designs on each bridge (span) of the causeway will celebrate earth, fire and water—valued elements of each tribe’s culture. Piers supporting the causeway will depict the native rice beds, the spring of life and the fisheries of Lake Butte des Morts. Winnebago County community sensitive design will highlight the distinctive characteristics of the community but will work in harmony with the proposed look of the corridor in Brown County.
